Beautifying our school grounds!

Each and every day, members of our school community help maintain our building and grounds and make Brecknock a wonderful place to work and learn. This summer, Corey Twaddell, former Brecknock student and son of sixth grade teacher Wendy Twaddell, helped beautify the Memorial Garden here at Brecknock. His efforts were part of a yearly SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) project through the Garden Spot High School FFA.

Corey prepared the flower beds by weeding and pruning the plants/flowers, and edging the beds.  He dedicated approximately 30 hours of his time to the project!  He will also be planting some mums and bulbs this fall.  Corey provided all of the labor for the project, and also enlisted the help of his parents to tackle the huge pile of stone, and his friend and former Brecknock student, Caleb Darrow, helped him with some weeding!

Corey has a strong connection with the Memorial Garden. He was about 4 years old when the Memorial Garden was dedicated in memory of first grade teacher, Mrs. Wendy Blakely.  With many of his classmates he also placed several tiles in the garden mosaic that graces our garden (the last image featured in the slideshow).  He was also a student of Mrs. Lisa Horning who is honored in the garden with a tree and plaque, and the inspiration behind our annual Brecknock Day of Service.

Corey said, “Working in the garden was an honor because being a former Brecknock student, I have many great memories of school grounds and Brecknock Elementary.”  He hopes the students and staff will continue to enjoy the Memorial  Garden, and that it will remain a special place.

Please view the slideshow below to see evidence of Corey’s hard work! Thank you, Corey!
